About the Founder

Charles Villarreal
Charles Villarreal is a software engineering and data leader with experience building and guiding analytics, AI, and engineering systems across industries. He also teaches graduate-level courses in Data Analytics, helping develop the next generation of data professionals.
His work consistently focuses on one principle:
Technical excellence matters-but only when it moves meaningful metrics that advance strategic objectives.
Why Horizon Foundry?
A foundry is where raw material is forged into something stronger and more durable.
The horizon represents forward motion-not chasing trends, but preparing for what’s next.
Together, the name reflects a commitment to:
- Engineering with intent
- Moving from friction to value
- Creating solutions that endure
How I Work
Engineering leadership is a constant negotiation between constraints. The work is rarely perfect vs. flawed. It’s more often tradeoffs, uncertainty, and timing-and choosing the path that creates durable value.
Principles in action
Intent before output
Work begins by clarifying the problem and the measurable outcome. Shipping is not the finish line-impact is.Tradeoffs are explicit
Every build carries cost: complexity, maintenance, time-to-value, risk. Decisions are documented with the why, not just the what.Navigate uncertainty with small bets
When requirements are fuzzy or data is incomplete, progress comes from tight feedback loops: prototypes, experiments, instrumentation, and phased delivery.Measure what matters
Success is tied to a KPI, a leading indicator, or a friction reduction that can be observed. If it can’t be measured, it’s treated as a hypothesis until it can.Durability over novelty
Tools change. Constraints remain. Systems are designed to be understandable, operable, and resilient-so they outlast hype cycles and org churn.
Who This Is For
Horizon Foundry is built for people doing real work under real constraints.
Individual Contributors (ICs)
You’ll get practical patterns to strengthen craft and judgment:
- clearer problem framing
- better system design habits
- measurement-first thinking
- reusable templates, exercises, and demonstrations
Leads and Managers
You’ll get tools for alignment and delivery:
- turning vague asks into measurable objectives
- navigating scope, sequencing, and tradeoffs
- building team operating systems that reduce rework
- communicating decisions clearly to stakeholders
Executives and Senior Leaders
You’ll get a pragmatic lens for strategy and accountability:
- KPI laddering and north star alignment
- recognizing when building is drifting from value
- evaluating investment decisions across data, software, and AI
- identifying durable capability vs. temporary momentum
Ways to Engage
If you’re building at the intersection of software, data, and AI-and want the work to move meaningful outcomes-there are a few ways to engage:
Advisory
Strategic guidance on architecture, analytics strategy, AI implementation, measurement, and operating models.Speaking
Talks and workshops for leaders and teams on durable systems, measurement, execution, and value-focused engineering.Collaboration
Co-building frameworks, demonstrations, and practical tooling with teams who want to ship with intent and prove value.
